9 Miguel

Saying Hey, I need to talk to you, hadn’t been precisely subtle. That might have been the least subtle thing Miguel had done since he was six. But he felt like he was trying to track way too many knives juggled by way too many performers. Really sharp knives. And besides that, he doubted Grayson was going to get a moment to himself any time in the next few hours—or days—or maybe ever again at this rate—and he was afraid to wait any longer.

He swung through the nearest door, which led to the room with the giant granite fireplace, the heavy furniture, the wide windows that looked out onto the long view across the forested mountains. Grayson liked this room, and come to that so did Miguel, but the important thing was, shut the door and nobody should be able to hear them. Nobody human, anyway, which was Miguel’s biggest concern.

Pivoting to face the Master, Miguel said, not bothering to phrase everything as a suggestion or meek little recommendation, “So today, attack number one: Gerhard Brault. His orders: take you specifically as a slave by means of witchcraft. Attack number two: Keziah’s uncle, another black dog made into a witch by Gossamer. His orders: kill Justin and make Keziah into a Trojan horse aimed at Dimilioc and at you specifically. Personally, I think it’s impossible to sound too alarmist right this minute, so I’m betting there’s another attack aimed at us, at least one more. And who’s right here on the spot? Senator Carlos Santibañez, who by pure coincidence showed up today. I know you said he’s Herrod’s ally, and I guess that means he’s come up a time or two in conversation, and that’s great. But, just so you know, I asked Natividad to see what she could do to figure him out, and she gave me a sign that she thinks he’s playing some cards close to his chest—”

“Did she?”

“Yes, sir, she did, honestly. I have a hard time believing Luis Santibañez’s uncle is in deep with bad guys, I’m not suggesting that. Unless he doesn’t know it himself, or he’s unwilling—the way Brault wasn’t willing, so that’s a tactic the bad guys obviously use. Or God knows what. I don’t know. I just know that whenever I look at him, I keep wondering if I’m hearing the hoofbeats of yet another wooden horse.”

“Indeed,” Grayson said, his tone more dry than angry.

“You thought of all this?” Miguel was relieved, and not entirely surprised. He knew it was a mistake to think Grayson Lanning was so distracted by black dog emotional volatility that he’d miss the obvious. Or even the less obvious. He didn’t wait for an answer, but said, “You haven’t asked Senator Santibañez whether he’s working for Gossamer, whether he’s heard her name before and if so where, whether he’s an ally or an enemy. It’s great if Herrod gave him a thumbs up, but he’s a senator and that means he’s got an agenda. I would bet a lot on that.
